Texas author, Donna Grahmann, lives with her husband-David and her guide dog-Huey, in their quaint little cottage, nestled among the piney woods of Magnolia. Border Collies, cats, horses, and sheep, share the family property, while also providing whimsical story ideas for Donna. Her upcoming projects include a Middle Grade novel, poems, and short stories. Tell us about your book:
The 2013 anthology, Behind Our Eyes: A Second Look, is the latest anthology by a unique group of 65 writers with disabilities. The topics range from humorous absurdity to tragic abuse, from cats and rabbits to guide dogs and even a guide horse, from medical fiascos to survival tactics, and through pangs of deprivation to heights of success. The vivid tapestry of life woven through their stories, poems, and essays, demonstrates what a captivating and diverse group of writers they are; yet, their creative writing collection showcases their similarities to each other and the world at large. This riveting anthology will pull at your heartstrings, bring you to tears, and make your spirit bloom with laughter.

How long did it take to write the book?
The editing staff gathered and reviewed submissions from prior years, while also receiving new submissions. The publication process took approximately one year.

What inspired you to write the book?
After Behind Our Eyes, Inc. published their first anthology in 2007, in which, 27 authors were represented, the group expanded to over 65 members and has continued to grow. Many of the BOE authors have had books published independently. Collecting fiction and nonfiction pieces submitted to Magnets and Ladders, as well as to the BOE list, presented the group with the opportunity to publish their second anthology, Behind Our Eyes: A Second Look.

Talk about the writing process. Did you have a writing routine? Did you do any research, and if so, what did that involve?
Each of the 65 authors crafted their fiction or nonfiction poems, memoirs, and short stories from their unique and creative minds or personal experiences. Among this large and diverse group of Authors, writing routines ranged from early to late hours, silent to musical preferences, and from private to public writing locations.

What do you hope your readers come away with after reading your book?
We hope that readers find Behind Our Eyes: A Second Look, edited by Kate Chamberlin, is the type of book that they want to revisit again and again. The format allows the reader to read the book straight through, explore each genre, or follow each author.
