Tell us about your book:
"The Bridge is a story about children who live in a small town where the kids believe in some magical creatures, but not necessarily all fairy tales. When the little girls think they see fairies dancing, they twirl around too as if imitating the fairies were the natural thing to do! The boys tease them about ogres living under the town stone bridge but the girls do not believe them, or at least, they do not want to at first. Then the four friends take a little trip together under the bridge and discover there is a magical and friendly world where a frog rides on the back of a swan."
How long did it take to write the book?
Three weeks and my whole life.
What inspired you to write the book?
I was influenced by memories of fabulous friendships and family from my childhood, and a beautiful bridge and stream that seemed to be magical.
Talk about the writing process. Did you have a writing routine? Did you do any research, and if so, what did that involve?
My recent short stories that were published, and the feeling that people recognize what it is I am trying to give inspired me.
What do you hope your readers come away with after reading your book? Two things: kids do well when they work at tasks together, and the importance of following your heart as a child when there is a positive sense of magic.
Excerpt from book:
“Lisa, why do you think only kids believe in fairy tales?”
“I don’t know why exactly,” says Beatrice, “but maybe it’s so we kids have something that’s only for us.”
